new main page
I updated the front page with a more structured one. A copy of the old front page is still here: Main_Page_test --Andreas 16:40, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
beta 1.5 release link on main page
The "NEW! A beta release of biojava 1.5 is now available" statement is pretty meaningless without a date. It should say 8 September 2006, and the link should be on "beta release of biojava 1.5", not on "available". --Yogi 05:14, 15 September 2006 (EDT)
Hi Yogi and welcome to the website. As per your comment, this is a wiki so feel free to mod this to clarify what is not ;-) --Foisys 12:42, 15 September 2006 (EDT)
- It may be a wiki, but my account doesn't permit me to edit the start page. --Yogi
He has a point - the Main_Page is only editable by the site admins. Who are the admins, out of interest? --[[User::rholland|Richard]]
I'm one, Foisys is another, there are some others from the open-bio admins as well. --Mark 21:27, 12 December 2006 (EST)
Unfortunately we can't let most people modify the home page otherwise we get mass spamming attacks. Spam attacks are by far the most common on the front page because they are most visible to webcrawlers. Typically people post a bunch of links to their pages to give the impression of back links from high importance pages. In future we should probably try and keep the home page as lite as possible with links to any detail so that users can modify the essential stuff. --Mark 21:32, 12 December 2006 (EST)
Sorry, i was off line for a while... This site has been targeted by some spam attacks in the past. I agree with Mark that we should keep the home page as lite as possible. But I see Yogi's point and suggestion and we should come up with something to address this. --Foisys 21:46, 12 December 2006 (EST)
- Actually I didn't mean to suggest that the start page should be editable - for the spamming reasons mentioned above. But I do think it would be nice to change the link/text as I said in my first comment. I'm surprised that with all this discussion happening here, this hasn't been done yet :) --Yogi 11:01, 15 December 2006 (EST)
- I'll go and modify this later this weekend (Dec.16-17). Regarding the link, either way is good. I guess it depends on the point of view... --Foisys 08:52, 16 December 2006 (EST)
PestFind
Sorry if this not the right place to ask this question, but I was wondering if the new version of Biojava has a program that is similar to the PestFind program that is part of bioperl (produced by EMBOSS)? If not, are there any other java versions for this analysis tool?
Not sure what PestFind is? It is probably best to ask this sort of question on the mailing lists. --Mark 21:27, 12 December 2006 (EST)
PEST regions are portions of proteins that are caracteristics of short-lived proteins. There is no such code in Biojava but you are welcome to contribute it if you are working on this. --Foisys 21:46, 12 December 2006 (EST)
BioJava License
Richard tells me that BioJava is licensed under LGPL. However, I can't find this information anywhere on biojava.org. I think it should be displayed prominently on the start page. --Yogi 11:13, 15 December 2006 (EST)
Actually, it is written on the Main page: look at the first sentence under the "Getting BioJava" section ;-) --Foisys 08:48, 16 December 2006 (EST)
